My grandfather Samuel Edmonds was one of the firing squad soldiers who executed Erskine Childers on 24th November 1922. He was a soldier in the Irish Free State Army which was fighting a civil war against the IRA. Erskine Childers took the IRA anti-treaty side in that war, was captured carrying a firearm, courtmartialled and sentenced to death. The British can be blamed for a lot of wrongs in Ireland but they did not shoot Childers. He was a victim of civil war.

Would you please check and if necessary amend one fact? According to other historians on the web Childers was shot by the Irish Free State during the course of the Irish civil war, technically for carrying a pistol; he was opposed to the Irish Free State which was supported by Collins. Thus he was not shot by the British government. Thanks for your time.
Otherwise I like your web page.
